The new dolls from Mattel have a more active play component.
For example, when Barbie's cell phone rings and you raise it
to her ear, she actually answers the phone and speaks. The
dolls sing into a microphone and each version features three
pre-programmed song clips. Kids can also plug in their MP3
players or any other music device and the doll will "lip sync"
and bop her head to the music. Mattel said an African-American
Nikki doll will be added to the line in March. "This is an example
of how technology is relevant to toys," said Byrne. "Mattel is
experimenting to the fullest extent possible even though Barbie
is still a classic form of play." The dolls, suggested for kids 5 and
up, have a suggested retail price of $29.99 each and are already
in stores.

TMX Ernie
Remember Tickle Me Elmo
from years back?
This year his friends are arriving, TMX Cookie Monster and TMX Ernie. Much
like the release of the "tickle me" versions of each toy 10 years ago.
They will retail for about $29.99 and just be a little bit shorter than
the TMX Elmo. They are sure to be big hits of kids that already have
the TMX Elmo doll or just enjoy the characters.

I Can Play Guitar
- On the heels of the immensely popular Guitar Hero videogame franchise,
Mattel, Hasbro and other toymakers have developed their own versions
of a guitar learning and playing system for kids. The "I Can Play Guitar
System" (bottom image) from Mattel's Fisher-Price division is for kids 5
years and up. It plugs into the TV. For easy play, it features color-coded
finger position buttons and shorter strings. Kids play the guitar by
matching the color-coded images that appear on the TV screen.
You earn points as you move through the different skill levels. Each
song and game cartridge has six songs that teach chords and also
includes a jam session mode. The system is slated for a July launch
in stores with a suggested retail price of $99. |

Optimus Prime Voice Changer Helmet
Toy robots are a rage this year, thanks to the upcoming July 4 release of
the live-action "Transformers" movie from DreamWorks Pictures and
Paramount
Pictures. Hasbro, which owns the Transformers brand has
created the
"Optimus Prime voice changer helmet" which makes your
voice sound like
a robot. The product will hit stores in June, selling for
$29.99,
suggested retail price.

Smart Cycle for pre-schoolers
Fisher-Price has figured out a smart way for busy parents
to keep an eye on their energetic toddler. It's called a
Smart Cycle -- a stationary cycle that uses TV plug-and-play
technology. Once it's connected, kids hop on and start
pedaling and steering their "on-screen vehicle." It comes
with learning software that contains three play modes. In
the Driving Mode, kids pedal through different environments.
In the Learning Mode, they can use the joy stick to play
games and learn letters, numbers, shapes and colors. In the
Big Race, they can time themselves and race against other
vehicles on the TV. Fisher-Price said parents can buy
additional games like Dora's Friendship Adventure, Sponge
Bob's Ocean Adventure and Barbie Fairytopia. The Smart
Cycle is expected to be in stores this July at a suggested
retail price of $99.99.
